June Muriel Brown MBE (born February 16, 1927 in Needham Market ) is a British actress . She gained fame through the role of Dot Cotton in the television series EastEnders , which she has played since 1985.

Life

June Brown was born in Needham Market, Suffolk , in 1927 . She had five siblings, two of whom died in childhood in 1932 and 1934. Brown attended St. John's Church of England School in Ipswich before graduating from Ipswich High School for Girls. After the outbreak of World War II , Brown moved to Wales and served with the Wrens in the later years of the war . During the war she gained her first stage experience at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School.

Brown began her acting career in 1952 with a small role in It Started in Paradise . In the following years she was seen in several dozen films and television series. From 1970 to 1971, Brown played the role of Mrs. Parsons in Coronation Street . In 1973 and 1974 she played the role of Lady Eleanor of Wessex in the four-part Doctor Who special The Time Warrior . Since 1985 Brown has appeared in her best-known role as Dot Cotton in more than 2,200 episodes of EastEnders .

Her best-known film roles include appearances on Sunday, Bloody Sunday , Murder on the Thames and Bean - The Ultimate Disaster Movie . In addition to her film and, above all, television career, which includes her involvement in more than 70 productions, Brown has also appeared in various stage plays since the beginning of her career.

June Brown is still active as an actress on stage and on television. In 2010 she appeared in a Christmas special on the dance show Strictly Come Dancing . She has received multiple awards for her services, including three British Soap Awards for her role in EastEnders . For the same role, Brown received a 2009 British Academy Television Award nomination . In 2008 she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

In April 2019, the actress announced that she was losing her eyesight and could therefore no longer perform in public. The year before, she had announced her departure from Eastenders for 2019. Nevertheless, Brown will continue to play the role of Dot Cotton in isolated episodes of the series in 2020 .

Brown was married twice. The first marriage with actor John Garley lasted from 1950 until his suicide in 1957, the second marriage with Robert Arnold from 1958 until his death in 2003. The marriage with Arnold resulted in six children, one of which was infancy died. June Brown now lives in Surrey .
