The Zittel-Kliffs are a series of up to 1400 m high cliffs in the East Antarctic Coatsland . In the Read Mountains of the Shackleton Range, they rise up in the northwestern part of the Du-Toit Nunatakker .
Participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958), led by British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs, mapped them in 1957. Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy . The British Antarctic Survey carried out further surveys from 1968 to 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the cliffs on January 5, 1972 after the German paleontologist Karl Alfred von Zittel (1839-1904).
