The Read Mountains are a group of rocky mountain peaks in the East Antarctic Coatsland . They are east of the Glen Glacier in the south-central part of the Shackleton Range .
They were spotted for the first time in 1957 during an overflight by participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) led by British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs . They are named after the British geologist Herbert H. Read (1889–1970), chairman of the science committee and member of the management committee of this research trip .
