Herbert Harold Read (born December 17, 1889 in Whitstable , † March 29, 1970 ) was a British geologist. He was a professor of geology at Imperial College .

In 1960 he received the Gustav-Steinmann Medal , in honor of his contributions to the study of the basement and the Granite (eulogy). In 1948 he initiated a project to explore the granites of County Donegal that would become the life work of his student Wallace S. Pitcher . Originally Read wanted to prove his granitization theory (conversion of surrounding rocks by granitic melts into granites), but in this case it turned out to be wrong.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1939) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Geological Society of London , of which he was President in 1947/48. In 1954 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences . In 1963 he received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society for outstanding contributions to the understanding of rock metamorphosis and the origin of granite . He also received the Bigsby Medal and Wollaston Medal (1952) from the Geological Society of London and the Penrose Medal (1967) from the Geological Society of America .

The Read Mountains in the East Antarctic Coatsland are named in his honor .
