Civil Courage is an opera composed as a commissioned work by Gordon Kampe , which was premiered in 2009 by the Stuttgart State Opera in the zeitoper series . Kampe had won the Stuttgart Composition Prize in 2007 and wrote the work in 2008/2009 in collaboration with the Akademie Schloss Solitude . The atonal music of the opera, consisting of "sounds and feeds", was supplemented with text fragments by Hannah Arendt and Virgil for the libretto . The staging of the world premiere came from the Brazilian director Marcelo Cardoso Gama, the musical direction was taken over by Bernhard Epstein .
