history

Wilhelminian style stucco element on the building

The precedent of the high school was a school called Fermeneciler Okulu . This was completely destroyed in the great fire in 1831. The lessons then took place provisionally in the courtyard of the Eisodion Church. Another provisional facility was moved into in 1835. School operations were relocated again in 1846. The school was named Eisodion Cemaat Okulu ("School of the Eisodion Congregation"). Towards the end of the century, the increasing dilapidation made another change necessary. The community decided to build a new school. Donations were collected from different people. Christakis Zografos , who was living in Paris at the time , made the largest single donation, more than 10,000 gold lira . In 1890 the Greek community decided to name the high school after Zografos. An architectural competition was held, which the design by Periklis Fotiadis won. The grammar school was re-inaugurated in 1893 and its first students graduated in 1899.

The high school

In the first few years the school always had more than 250 students. Before the pogrom in Istanbul in 1955 against the Greek minority, the number of students was over 350. Many artists, architects, politicians and theologians from the Greek diaspora attended school here, including Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople . Today the school has no more than 45 students and fewer than 20 teachers. Due to the law, like all schools , the school applies the Turkish curriculum in addition to the Greek subjects (Greek language, literature and religion).
