Zoetrope was an American thrash metal band from Chicago , Illinois that was formed in 1976 and disbanded in 1993.

history

The band was formed in 1976 by drummer and singer Barry Stern, guitarist Kevin Michael Rasofsky, bassist Calvin "Willis" Humphrey and guitarist Ken Black. Together, the band initially only played cover versions, but soon developed their own songs, so that in 1980 the first single was released. Although Zoetrope was a metal band, they were also very active in Chicago's hardcore punk scene. So she played various appearances in O'Banions, a punk bar in Chicago. Ken Black and Barry Stern also produced the self-titled album by the hardcore punk band Life Sentence in 1986. After the single was released, several demos were released, causing the band to sign a deal with Combat Records . The album Amnesty was released in 1985. In 1987 the band went to Los Angeles to record the second album A Life of Crime with producer Randy Burns ( Megadeth , Nuclear Assault ). During the recording, Ken Black left the band to fight his drug problems. He was replaced by Louis Svitek. Although Svitek was on the album cover, all recordings are still from Black. During the tour for A Life of Crime , Svitek left the band and joined MOD . After the tour, Barry Stern also joined the band Trouble . The album Mind Over Splatter was released in 1993 alongside Rasofsky with a new line-up before the band split up that same year.

Louis Svitek later played in bands like Lost Cause, Ministry , Mind Funk , Pigface , The Hollow Steps and Project 44. He currently runs the Wu Li Records label, a hip-hop label from Chicago. Barry Stern was a drummer on a tour of Cathedral and made a guest appearance on Debris Inc.'s self-titled debut album, which also featured ex-members of Saint Vitus and Trouble. Barry died on April 1, 2005 of complications after hip replacement surgery. Until his death he was active in the band D-Connect. Trouble dedicated the 2007 album Simple Mind Condition to him .

style

The band called their music "Street Metal". The music is described as simple and aggressive and is compared to bands like Exciter , Muro and Blood Money .
