The Zollbuche natural area is a mountain range in the center of the Gladenbacher Bergland . It is located at the interface between the Marburg-Biedenkopf and Lahn-Dill districts . Its ridge, up to 500 m high, runs in an east-west direction. It forms the watershed between the Salzböde rivers in the north and the Aar in the south. The name of the ridge goes back to the Zollbuche fork of the same name .

Until 1854, the only direct, duty-free connection route (today L 3047) from the Hessian hinterland to the provincial capital of Hesse-Darmstadt, Gießen , ran via the Zollbuche .

Within the natural area of the Westerwald (main unit group 32), the Gladenbacher Bergland (main unit 320), the customs beech forms the natural area 320.03.

Limits

The eastern border to the Scheldt Forest is the watershed between the northern Aar tributary Siegbach and its eastern neighboring rivers, the Weibach and (Tringensteiner) Schelde .

In the western north, the upper Salzbödetal, which is still part of the customs beech, forms the border to the 600 m high plateau of the Bottenhorn plateau , while in the eastern north and north west the Salzbödetal is actually the border to the natural area of the same name.

In the east south the valley of the Vers- tributary river Krebsbach (Vers) is the border to the natural area Salzbödetal, in the west south the border to the Niederweidbach basin follows mainly the forest and the Aar valley , which is no longer counted as a customs beech.

Rivers

The north of the natural area is dominated by the salt flats , the south by the Aar . With the exception of the headwaters, the Siegbach runs almost entirely in the natural area and flows through the far west from north to south.

places

Most of the districts of the Bad Endbach community are to the north of the Zollbuche or just beyond it ; further east the area of the Gladenbach districts of Weidenhausen, Erdhausen and Mornshausen is touched; The core municipality of Lohra is located on the extreme eastern border , and its parts of the municipality are also located in the eastern south.

In addition to the municipalities mentioned from the Marburg-Biedenkopf district, parts of the municipality of Bischoffen are also located in the western south , while in the far west almost all districts of the Siegbach municipality lie along the eponymous river - both municipalities belong to the Lahn-Dill district .

mountains

The striking elevations on the eastern edge of the Zollbuche natural area viewed from the north (from right to center): Dreisberg (448 m), Koppe (454 m) and Hemmerich (470 m). To the right of the middle you can see the more distant Dünsberg (498 m), while the Zollbuche ridge goes right into the Bad Endbacher Platte (up to 488 m).
The Hemmerich (part of the mountain range in the upper picture) from the south

The highest elevations are naturally found at the north-western junction with the still significantly higher Bottenhorn plateaus . The most striking and most characteristic of the landscape are the “triumvirate” of Hemmerich, Koppe and Dreisberg in the far east.

The Koppe also has an observation tower that can be reached from the Gladenbach-Erdhausen sports field, which, apart from the smaller number of floors, is a replica of the even better-known Rimberg Tower, which is clearly visible only 12 km to the north-northeast.

In the Zollbuche natural area, sorted by height, you will find:

  • Hirschhohl (503 m), at the north-western junction with the Bottenhorn plateaus
  • Schönscheid (498 m), northwest
  • Bad Endbacher Platte (up to 488 m), center
  • Hemmerich (470 m), "Dreigestirn" in the east
  • Koppe (454 m, observation tower), "Dreigestirn" in the east
  • Dreisberg (448 m), most easterly mountain of the "triumvirate"
