Duty Free Road

Duty-free roads , also known as toll roads in some regions (not to be confused with customs roads that must be used for the import and export of goods subject to customs and control), are a means of handling road traffic in border regions without customs control . These roads often connect two places in a state that are separated by foreign territory. The roads are usually fenced and monitored on the basis of special agreements by the participating states.

The Basel-Mulhouse airport , which is located on French territory is, with Basel in Switzerland by a fenced-in duty-free road (Route Douanière) connected. The airport, a joint project between France and Switzerland, is the third largest Swiss airport. The road is also used by the airport bus (BVB line 50), which connects Basel SBB train station with the airport every quarter of an hour.

Geneva airport

Terminal 1 at Geneva Airport is linked to France by a duty-free road. It enables goods to be forwarded without having to go through customs controls. They remain exclusively subject to the French or European procedures.

Weil am Rhein - Loerrach

Since the 19th century, the neighboring German communities of Weil am Rhein and Lörrach have been interested in a toll-free road running along the Wiese River across the canton of Basel-Stadt in the Riehen community . The project was regulated in a state treaty between Switzerland and Germany in 1977. It has been changed several times since then, but remained controversial because of a possible impairment of the last flood-like section of the river and difficult tectonic conditions on the Schlipf mountain section of the Tüllinger hill. As a result of several years of resistance and citizen protests, completion was delayed several times. The German toll-free road over Swiss territory was not built until 2006 and was opened to traffic on October 4, 2013 - initially provisionally.

Israeli duty-free highway on Palestinian territory

In the 1990s, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, roads were built between Israel and the Israeli-occupied territories in the West Bank , which were reserved for Israeli cars and could be viewed as duty-free roads. Almost all roads in the West Bank are now open to Palestinian vehicles. A road between the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian West Bank through Israeli territory was also built for Palestinians only.
