The customs house in the East Frisian city of Leer ( Lower Saxony ) was built in 1863 to handle foreign trade and is now a cultural and event center .

location

The customs house is located between the train station for passenger traffic and the Georgsdock of the port of Leer, which has now been filled in . The address is Bahnhofsring 4.

Building description

The brick building is 70 meters long and has four cantilevered floors. The old track systems have largely been removed.

use

The building served as a warehouse, for example for spices , tea , building materials and other goods delivered from overseas . It was also used to load freight wagons , in particular to and from the port of Emden . In the 1950s, the Bundeswehr first used the building, and then the packaging department of the Olympia-Werke was housed here. In the 1970s, the building was only used as a warehouse again until the Olympia company had to give up its location in the city for economic reasons. After 15 years of vacancy, an association was founded in 1993 to preserve the now dilapidated building, which gradually began the renovation work and converted the building into a culture and event center. At times, the Leer studio of the radio station Radio Ostfriesland had its seat in the customs house.
