Tait received his education at a school in Cincinnati and at Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia . In Bethany he published a magazine called The Stylus .

In 1853 Tait started with his two compatriots, the landscape painter William Louis Sonntag the Elder. Ä. (1822–1900) and Robert Duncanson , a trip to Europe, which led him to Italy in particular, and whose impressions he recorded in his book European Life, Legend, and Landscape , published in 1859 . He came to Düsseldorf in 1853 and visited his “old friend” Worthington Whittredge , who introduced him to Emanuel Leutze and William Dickinson Washington . In Düsseldorf he was again palpable between 1859 and 1870, as a member of the Malkasten artists' association and as a private student of the landscape painters August Weber and Andreas Achenbach . In the summer of 1868 he was visited there by Thomas Buchanan Read . He already knew this American poet and portrait painter, who was well-known at the time, from his time as a schoolboy in Cincinnati and from 1853, when he visited him with the painter Sonntag before his first trip to Europe to receive travel advice, shortly afterwards in Italy, where they maintained a close friendly contact in Florence. At the end of 1855 they traveled back to the United States together aboard the steamer Ericson . Even after that, they had met and written several times.

In addition to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he was enrolled in 1862 and took lessons from Rudolf Wiegmann , he studied with Adolf Heinrich Lier in Munich between 1873 and 1876 . There he also socialized with Hermann Baisch . In 1866 and the early 1870s he had returned to the United States, where he participated in art exhibitions at the Cincinnati Industrial Exhibition in 1871 and 1872 and was awarded first prizes. In 1871/1872 he lived in Baltimore. A friend of Tait was the American poet and musician Sidney Lanier . As a reviewer, Tait wrote for New York Mail and Express .
