Ludwig Schaller (sculptor)
Ludwig Schaller (born October 13, 1804 in Vienna , † April 29, 1865 in Munich ) was an Austrian sculptor.
Life
Ludwig Schaller was born in Vienna in 1804 as the son of the history painter Anton Schaller (1773–1844) into a family of artists. His uncle Johann Nepomuk Schaller (1777–1842) was a sculptor, his older brother Eduard (1802–1848) was also a history painter .
Despite his early enthusiasm for art, Schaller was destined for the clergy. Therefore, at the age of 18, he entered the Vienna Piarist monastery . On the advice of some clergymen, he switched to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts to practice drawing, modeling and wood sculpture, the latter with Joseph Käßmann (1784–1856). He also had further lessons in sculpture in his uncle's studio.
In 1828, Schaller and his friend Moritz von Schwind went to Munich to work for Johannes Leeb , Ernst Mayer and finally Ludwig Schwanthaler . Under Schwanthaler's direction, Schaller was able to contribute to the decoration of the Alte Pinakothek and the ballroom building of the Munich Residence.
The style of his work was determined by the classical training at the Vienna Academy as well as by the Nazarene influences of his uncle. Even the romantic style Schwanthaler was visible.
