Zongo is a city in the Sud-Ubangi province in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with 28,105 inhabitants (2004). It is located on the south bank of the Ubangi across from Bangui , the capital of the Central African Republic . Zongo is connected to Bangui by a ferry, but has lost its importance as a transportation hub as much of the traffic flow shifted further east in the late 1980s .

Since the fall of Mobutu , Zongo has been ruled by the Mouvement de Liberation du Congo . In 2001 the city saw an influx of refugees from the Central African Republic . In 2002, a coup attempt took place in Bangui , for which, according to the Central African government, former soldiers among these refugees were responsible.

After François Bozizé , President of the Central African Republic was overthrown in March 2013, his wife and children, including his eldest son Francis, who was Minister of Defense, fled the Central African Republic via Zongo.
