Zsolt Balla
Zsolt Balla (born February 18, 1979 in Budapest ) is a rabbi in Germany and a federal military rabbi for the Bundeswehr .
Life
Balla studied engineering at the Technical University of Budapest and has lived in Germany since 2002. After graduating, he attended the Yeshiva ( Talmud University) “Beis Zion” in Berlin and completed rabbinical studies at the Orthodox Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminar in Berlin . After graduating in 2009, he was ordained a rabbi in Munich that same year . Balla, together with Avraham Radbil, was the first Orthodox rabbi trained in Germany since 1938.
Balla has been the rabbi of the Israelite Religious Community in Leipzig since 2009 . Since 2012 he has been a board member of the Orthodox Rabbinical Conference and head of the Institute for Traditional Jewish Liturgy in Leipzig and since 2019 a full-time state rabbi of Saxony .
As a part-time military rabbi, he is the first representative of Jewish military chaplaincy in the German armed forces for around 100 years. He was introduced to office in the Leipzig synagogue on June 21, 2021.
Balla is married and has three children.
