The Rositz sugar factory is a former factory for the production of sugar from sugar beet in Rositz, East Thuringia . The building complex is a listed building.

history

Rositzer Sugar Loaf, ca.1890.

The plant was built in 1871 and went into operation in 1872, producing raw sugar from beets. At that time, the factory was the first in Germany to have electrical lighting. But as early as April 1874, the stock corporation filed for bankruptcy. In 1882, a sugar refinery was built in place of the old beet sugar factory. Although the factory was actually built as a pure molasses desugaring plant, in 1904 production was switched to processing raw sugar. In 1956, they switched to processing raw sugar from Cuba into white sugar . In 1965 production was stopped and sugar was only packaged in small quantities. In the same year the production of packaging and packaging aids began. During the GDR era, the factory belonged to the VEB Zuckerkombinat Demokratie Zeitz.

Current situation

The complex of works was exemplary restored in 1995 and is a listed building. The factory now produces windows and doors from the PaX company , as well as packaging and packaging aids from the Thuringian Fiber Drum company . Parts of the former factory halls are empty, but are continuously being restored.

Until December 8, 2011, there was a shunting locomotive of the type LKM V 10 B and two wagons from the 1920s, which were brought to Gera by heavy load transport , where they are being restored by Eisenbahnwelten eV .
