Feed is a sculpture by the British sculptor Tony Cragg in Wuppertal .

location

The sculpture is located in front of the extension of the headquarters of the Stadtsparkasse Wuppertal in Elberfeld on the corner of Südstrasse and Am Johannisberg.

description

The sculpture, which is part of the Johannisberg Sculpture Park , is eight meters high and weighs 8.5 tons. The shape is reminiscent of a drop or sample of toothpaste that has been squeezed out of a tube. It is cast from bronze and provided with around 25,000 holes four centimeters in diameter. On the artist's website, the dimensions are stated as 850 × 600 × 500.

The name supply is explained by the technical function of the sculpture as an intake port (or intake valve) for the air conditioning system there, which it also covers. This same idea, the combination of air conditioning and modern art, was later adopted by the Barmenia and also commissioned a work from Tony Cragg. In 2009 and 2010, a two-part, unnamed aluminum sculpture was erected over a ventilation system in front of the new headquarters building.

The Westdeutsche Zeitung wrote at the time:

Round, organic shapes were at the end of the process. Starting from a radius given by the air conditioning technology at a height of three meters - where the air is mainly sucked in - the plastic tapers upwards, gently bends to a harmonious profile. The plastic body is perforated - 25,000 holes four centimeters in size ensure transparency and make the plastic feel light. "

- Frank Uferkamp

Zufuhr is part of the Tony Craggs group of works, which also includes Envelope (1996) and Ferryman (1997).

history

Environment of the sculpture

In 1996, the Wuppertaler Sparkasse built another administration building between Bahnhofstrasse and Am Johannisberg. At the entrance of the building on the corner of Südstraße / Am Johannisberg there is an intake port for the air conditioning, this should be covered with a plastic. The British artist Tony Cragg, who lives and works in Wuppertal, won a tender for this. The sculpture Zufuhr was created in his studio in Wichlinghaus at the time and with the help of the Düsseldorf art caster Karl-Heinz Schmäke .

The inauguration took place on September 6, 1996.
