Zuhal Demir (born March 2, 1980 in Genk ) is a Belgian lawyer and politician of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). From February 2017 to December 2018 she was State Secretary for Poverty Reduction, Equal Opportunities, Science Policy and Large Cities in the Michel federal government . Before that, she had been represented in the Chamber of Deputies for the N-VA since 2010 . At the local level, Demir was Chair of the District Council in Antwerp until the end of 2015 .

Life

Zuhal Demir was born in Genk and is the third child of a Turkish - Kurdish family. Her father was a miner . She studied law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU.Leuven) and completed a specialization in labor law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Demir then started working as a lawyer in an international law firm with a branch in Antwerp .

In 2010 she moved to the Chamber of Deputies for the N-VA after the federal elections on June 13 . There she was sometimes referred to as " Iron Lady ", probably based on her surname ("Demir" means iron in Turkish). Demir became better known in 2015 when she was photographed in the semicircle of the chamber during a photo shoot for the Dutch-language men's magazine P-Magazine .

After the chamber chairman Siegfried Bracke (N-VA) decided in February 2017, due to an affair about his part-time consultancy work at Telenet , to forego the N-VA's top candidacy in the municipal council elections in Ghent, State Secretary Elke Sleurs (N-VA) became the mayoral candidate of Party proclaimed. In pursuit, she decided to hand over this office to Demir in order to better prepare for the local elections of 2018.

At the local level, Demir was Chair of the Antwerp District Council from 2012 to 2015 . When she decided to move to Genk for family reasons, she had to give up this mandate.
