Zum Silbersack is a pub in St. Pauli near the Reeperbahn .

history

The restaurant was founded in 1949 by the couple Erna and Friedrich Thomsen in Hamburg-St. Pauli on a rubble plot near the Reeperbahn. In 1958 Friedrich Thomsen died, his wife Erna continued the business alone. The restaurant soon became a cult pub. Celebrities like Heinz Rühmann , Curd Juergens , Hans Albers , Freddy Quinn and Hildegard Knef were among the guests.

Erna Thomsen, born on April 16, 1924, died of heart failure on May 9, 2012 at the age of 88. Thereupon the "silver sack" was closed because neither son Gerd Thomsen nor sister Heidrun Thomsen, who lives in Scotland, wanted to continue the cult pub. The silver sack, however, lives on under different management.

Start-up

Regulars, residents, the St. Pauli Interest Group (IG St. Pauli), the St. Pauli Citizens' Association from 1843 e. V. , the district office of Hamburg-Mitte and a Facebook initiative that will soon have more than 1,300 members campaigned for preservation. Through the mediation of the then District Office Manager Andy Grote , the bar property with the associated residential building was sold to the "Friends of Silbersack GmbH & Co. KG". This company was founded by 20 Hamburg real estate merchants, including Andreas Rehberg (Grossmann & Berger GmbH), Frank Schmidt (Quantum), Stefan Wulff ( Otto Wulff Bauunternehmung ) and Andreas Fraatz (Fraatz-Bartels group of companies) and real estate financier Christian Holle . The purchase price is estimated at around one million euros .

The "silver sack" was leased again and was able to reopen in August 2012. The tenant is Dominik Großefeld from Dortmund, who started working in the pub in 2010 and is considered the foster son of the late Silbersack landlady. He has signed a ten-year contract with the new owner group with an option for a further ten years.

Facade art

The building with its colorful, unusual facade was depicted by various artists, including the Hamburg scene painter 4000 , who painted the “silver sack ” for his St. Pauli series.
