life and work

"Silver sack" from the series "The Newe St Pauli"

The artist 4000 grew up near Heilbronn and completed his school education in 1983 with the Abitur at the local Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium . From 1985 to 1988 he trained as a commercial artist. After completing his training, he lived briefly in Bremen , then in Hamburg and Berlin.

His career began in the 1990s in his studio in Hamburg-St. Pauli . He first became known through his work in producer galleries, alternative clubs and event rooms in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich , Cologne and Frankfurt . As a so-called “scene painter”, he has always distanced himself from the market and its marketing instruments. The works are now represented in recognized galleries and at trade fairs, and are owned by prominent art collectors.

4000 often divides his series into categories. This is how the “Berlin” and “Hamburg” series came about, with rough, fast depiction of urban scenes and buildings, such as the Berlin TV tower or the Spiegel building in Hamburg. A large part of his cityscapes was created over the St. Pauli district: Reeperbahn , Esso petrol station , Zum Silbersack . The series “Richter to go” - following the works of the German painter Gerhard Richter - is also well known . The " Beck’s " series are also popular, with a variety of depictions of the beer can of the same name. In addition, ironic series were created, such as the “Potato Family” or “The Five Mark Piece”.

4000 also designed film sets, illustrations and numerous book covers, such as for the books "Deutsches Theater" and "Nüchtern am Weltnichtrauchertag" by Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre or the book " Wiener Straße " by Sven Regener . Since 1993, 4000 has realized over 40 covers for the Berlin publishing house Pulpmaster , including books by the writers Jim Nisbet , Thor Kunkel , Garry Disher and Tom Franklin .

At the beginning of June 2016 an extensive anniversary exhibition "25 Years 4000" took place, with numerous works by the artist as well as contributions from companions and colleagues, including Jim Avignon , DM Bob, Till Gerhard , Henning Kles , Karen Koltermann, Stefan Marx , Heiko Müller , SAM , Dennis Scholl , Patrick Sellmann.
