EE guild to Rebleuten is since the Middle Ages existing guild in Basel .

history

The guild was founded in Basel between 1364 and 1366. It was incorporated into the municipal guild order as a half or part guild with the gray cloths to form a “split guild” . In 1453 the council ordered the separation of the two half-guilds, with the rebels gaining the jointly acquired guild house "zur Glocke" on Freienstrasse.

Viticulture in and outside the city was of great importance at that time. Like bread and meat, wine was a staple food in the Middle Ages. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the flourishing city of Basel attracted many newcomers, including winegrowers from the neighboring vineyards and from eastern Switzerland.

Johann Rudolf Wettstein was accepted into the rebel guild in 1610, together with his father, who immigrated from the Zurich area at the time. In 1620 he became councilor to Rebleuten, in 1635 the council elected him chief guild master and ten years later mayor of the free state of Basel. The culmination of his statesmanship was his posting to the peace congress in Münster and Osnabrück . The Swiss Confederation owes its independence from the German Empire to him. It was solemnly recognized by the great powers in the Westphalian peace treaty in 1648.

In the 17th century there was a lack of offspring among the rebels. Representatives of other professions were accepted into the rebel guild: traders, officers, scholars. In 1678 the last Rebmann was elected guild master. His successors were then all members of the families involved in the urban regiment. In 1798, during the French Revolution, the Confederation of States broke up. The mayor and council transferred their functions and powers to the new National Assembly. This marked the end of the political function of the Basel guilds. For the time being, however, the compulsory guild could hold out. Anyone wishing to practice a trade in Basel had to be a master and belong to the relevant guild. It was only after the revision of the Federal Constitution that unrestricted freedom of trade and commerce achieved a breakthrough in Basel in 1874 .

present

In addition to the rebels, the following professions are pointed out to the guild today: upholsterers, merchants, shepherds, typographers. The Rebleuten Guild cultivates the traditional traditions. It is a community of Basel citizens who are committed to the quality of life of the residents of the city of Basel. The guild is politically and religiously neutral. However, it is clearly committed to the principles of a free, democratic society. She cultivates sociability among the guild brothers and hospitality with related guilds in the city, in the rest of Switzerland and in the region. It wants to support the guild brothers in social, economic or health emergencies, maintain contact with them and enable them to actively participate in the guild events.

It promotes an awareness of responsibility for the city of Basel. Whenever possible, she tries to help maintain the local language, the «Baseldytsch». It owns a historical guild treasure and uses its income for the benefit of the guild and for charitable purposes. It gives training grants for sons and daughters of guild brothers, support contributions to needy widows of guild brothers and funeral payments for deaths in families of the guild brothers.
