Paul Koelner

Paul Rudolph Koelner (own Cologne; born October 31, 1878 in Basel , † February 22, 1960 ibid) was a Swiss educator and historian .

life and work

Paul Koelner completed his intermediate teacher training in Basel with a semester abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris . He then taught at the boys' secondary school in Basel. In addition to his teaching activities and especially after his retirement in 1935, he conducted extensive studies on the history of his hometown. The history of the guild formed a focus of his research. His local history “Anno dazumal”, published by the educational department's teaching material publisher, found widespread use. He also wrote many shorter historiographical articles for the Sunday supplement of the Basler Nachrichten.

In 1932 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel for his research in local history. In addition, he was awarded a prize of 1,000 francs by the State Literature Commission in 1958.
