Vincent Pfnür

Vinzenz Pfnür (born June 16, 1937 in Berchtesgaden ; † August 1, 2012 in Münster-Amelsbüren ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and professor of church history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster .

Career and occupation

Pfnür began studying Catholic theology in 1956 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Freising and studied in 1959 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he completed his studies. In 1963 he followed Joseph Ratzinger as a research assistant at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. With the work supervised by Ratzinger and Erwin Iserloh in agreement with the doctrine of justification ? he became a Dr. theol. PhD.

In 1974 he became an academic councilor in Münster and a senior councilor in 1976. In 1982 he received the professorship for church history and its didactics at the seminar for medieval and modern church history of the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Münster, which he held until his retirement in August 2002. He held teaching positions in Paderborn, Bielefeld, Wuppertal and a substitute professor in Bochum. From 1971 to 1995 Pfnür was the editor of the Theological Review .

Pfnür was a member of the Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict XVI student group. and co-initiator of the Joseph Ratzinger Pope Benedict XVI Foundation . His theological library is in the residence of Pope Benedict XVI. housed.

Interdenominational research and advocacy for ecumenism

For his dissertation, Pfnür already dealt with an interdenominational issue. Apart from Ratzinger and Iserloh, Pfnür saw itself scientifically committed to the Protestant church historian Ernst Bizer . The focus of Pfnür's scientific work was the Reformation in the wake of Martin Luther .

As a member of the Münster Ecumenical Commission, Pfnür was committed to the dialogue between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg and the Diocese of Münster . For the German Bishops' Conference he worked as an advisor on ecumenical issues. Across countries he was involved as a member of the “International Joint Roman Catholic / Evangelical Lutheran Commission for Understanding Between the Christian Churches”.
