Jörg Ernesti

Jörg Ernesti (born September 8, 1966 in Paderborn ) is a German church historian .

Life

Jörg Ernesti studied philosophy and Catholic theology from 1986 to 1992 at the Theological Faculty of Paderborn , the University of Vienna and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1993 he was ordained a priest there . In 1994 he completed his studies in Rome with a licentiate .

In 1997 he was with a thesis on Emperor Theodosius I at the Gregorian doctorate , then he worked as a pastor and school teacher. In 2003 he qualified as a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for the subject of church history with a work on Ferdinand von Fürstenberg ; for this work he was awarded the Ignaz Theodor Liborius Meyer Prize in 2004. He then worked as a private lecturer at the Mainz Chair for Middle and New Church History. In 2007 Ernesti received his second doctorate in ecumenical theology at the Paderborn Theological Faculty with a dissertation on the topic of ecumenism in the Third Reich .

Jörg Ernesti was full professor for church history and patrology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bressanone from 2007 to 2013 . From 2007 to 2011 he was a part-time parish administrator of St. Andrä and Afers , 2012/13 pastor in Mittewald and Franzensfeste . Since October 1, 2013, Ernesti has been Professor of Church History, with special emphasis on Middle and New Church History, at the Theological Faculty of the University of Augsburg . Since October 2019 he has been dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Augsburg. He also works as a lecturer for church history and patrology in Brixen.

Ernesti's research focus since 2010 has been the recent history of the Pope. On this topic he has presented three pope biographies and numerous articles in newspapers and magazines.

Ernesti is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .
