To the Holy Family (Cologne)
To the Holy Family (also: Orphanage Church ) in the Cologne district of Sülz is the church of the former orphanage on the Sülzgürtel .
The neo-baroque orphanage church was the central part of the orphanage in Cologne-Sülz , which was built before the First World War . It was in World War II destroyed with the exception of the tower and built in the years 1951 to 1966 again. In 1955 the architect Dominikus Böhm was commissioned to rebuild the destroyed church. After the death of his father, Gottfried Böhm took over the further planning. The aim was to create a “church for children with lots of light and cheerful symbols”.
From 1956 to 1958 he built today's sacred building, incorporating the neo-baroque tower that has been preserved. The outer walls were poured in loose concrete, for which the bricks from the destroyed old church were partially used. The choir wall is decorated with a relief by Jochem Pechau . A flock of 126 lambs and a herding dog accompany the Good Shepherd shown on the entrance page. The actual church space is on the upper floor above a hall used for various purposes in the children's home. The church interior is a rectangular room, which is divided by 128 octagonal small windows. Children making music or singing are inserted into the flower or star-shaped glass patterns; they form a children's orchestra that surrounds the entire room. The window rosettes deal with the Holy Family.
The liturgical and spatial center of the church is the elevated altar canopy supported by columns. Below it are the altar and the tabernacle created by Eva Burgeff in 1958 . The church also features a baptismal font, also made by Eva Burgeff, with two connected holy water basins, the Stations of the Cross by Jochem Pechau and the organ from the Seifert company.
The church has been a listed building since 1989 and was named Monument of the Month by the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection (RVDL) in May 2007 . It does not officially belong to any pastoral care area, as it is owned by the City of Cologne. It is currently used liturgically by the parish of St. Bruno.
Bells
There are three small bells in the tower , the middle one of which has a high historical value.
