There is a pilgrimage church for Our Lady of Sorrows in Matzenhofen , a district of the Central Swabian community of Unterroth in the Neu-Ulm district . The pilgrimage church is looked after by the Roman Catholic parish of St. Gordian and Epimach in Unterroth.

history

It is not known when the pilgrimage began. The miraculous image, the Pietà , was created around 1470 to 1480. The church was first documented on December 5, 1594. The existing chapel had to give way to a new building. According to a votive inscription, the church was renovated in 1620, which makes an earlier building appear necessary. The church is believed to have been built in the same year the chapel was demolished. Good furnishings and three altars are mentioned in a visitation report from 1626. From 1641 a hermit lived with the church. This tradition came to an end in 1826.

In 1738 an extension of the church was planned, but this was not carried out. The construction plan and cost estimate were obtained in 1746. The construction costs for the church, which is six shoes wider and 11 shoes longer, should be 1365 guilders. The foundation stone was laid in July 1748. The master builder Johann Georg Beer and the master carpenter Michael Schaule, both from nearby Babenhausen , were determined to carry out the construction. They received 5429 guilders, 15 kreuzers and 6 hellers for their work. The carpentry work for the altars, stalls and choir stalls as well as the confessionals was done by Johann Zobel, also from Babenhausen. The miraculous image kept in Babenhausen was brought back to the pilgrimage church on October 5, 1750. Franz Xaver von Adelmann consecrated the church in the same year. The frescoes were created in 1751 by Franz Martin Kuen from Weißenhorn. In 1768 the hermitage was built over the oratory after the church had been broken into. The neighboring hermit's house thus lost its purpose.

Origin of the name of the parish Unterroth: St. Gordian and St. Epimach (from the Greek Epimachus ).
