Zuwara ( Arabic زوارة, DMG Zuwāra , Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵡⴰⵜ ⵡⵉⵍⵍⵓⵍ Tamurt n Wat Willul ) is a port city in northwest Libya .
geography
Zuwara is 108 km west of Tripoli and 60 km from the Tunisian border. It is also the capital of the Munizip an-Nuqat al-Chams .
45,000 people live in the city. The population consists mainly of Ibadites , a separate branch of Islam who speak a local Berber language.
history
Leo Africanus mentioned the city for the first time. In a Catalan sailing book, Punta dar Zoyara appears in 1375 . In the 20th century, Zuwara became the westernmost outpost of Italian Libya (1912–1943).
At the beginning of the uprising in Libya in February 2011 , demonstrations against the rule of Muammar al-Gaddafi also took place in Zuwara , which, according to eyewitness reports, were also joined by local police forces. A short time after the capture of az-Zawiya further to the east, Zuwara was also surrounded by government troops and on March 14th, it was one of the last coastal cities in the west of the country to be captured.
Economy and Transport
At that time Zuwara was the terminus of the railway line from the capital Tripoli.
The city's man-made port offers protection for the motorized fishing fleet. Grains , dates and esparto grass are local products.
In the course of the state collapse, Zuwara became a starting point for the smuggling that brings refugees to Europe .
