The Zwölferhorn cable car was a two-cable gondola lift and ran from Sankt Gilgen (until the Salzkammergut local railway from St. Gilgen station was abandoned) up to the Zwölferhorn . Its opening took place on June 30, 1957 and its shutdown came into effect on December 31, 2019. The Zwölferhorn cable car was the last operational double cable car based on the Girak system , a modification of the Wallmannsberger system . In the course of its operating time around 8.5 million passengers were carried. The construction of a new Zwölferhorn cable car by the Doppelmayr / Garaventa Group is under construction and should be ready for use at the end of October 2020.

Location and former infrastructure

The valley station was located southwest of the center of Sankt Gilgen, immediately after exiting the station, the railway crossed the Salzkammergut local railway and Wolfgangsee Straße (B 158) and reached the mountain station near the summit of the Zwölferhorn viewing mountain via five supports . It opened up a hiking area, in winter a cleared panorama path is available, there are also deep snow runs and groomed slopes with a five kilometer long valley run, which, however, due to the lack of snowmaking systems, can only be used when there is sufficient natural snow . The runway was also used by paragliders , there are two take-off points near the summit with take-off directions north and south-east and a landing field near the former valley station.

Future planning

The cable car operating license for the existing cable car expired in 2017 after 60 years of operation, but was then extended to December 31, 2019. Since the plant could then no longer be operated, plans were initiated for a replacement plant. It was intended to shut down the existing lift in autumn 2016 and to build a new monocable gondola by spring 2017 . Instead of the characteristic red and yellow four-gondolas, eight panoramic gondolas are to be used. The travel time is to be increased to approx. 9 minutes, but the transport capacity is to be increased to 1800 people / hour. New station buildings are also to be built, as well as a parking garage at the valley station. The building permit was delayed due to the lack of consent from property owners, and the operating permit was extended twice until 2019. The demolition of the old cable car system began in January 2020.
