Zwi Schulmann , actually Zvi Herman Shulman , (born 1915 in Łódź , Congress Poland ; died 1986 in Rishon LeZion , Israel ) was an Israeli entrepreneur and councilor of Rishon LeZion. During the National Socialist era , he was a prisoner in the Buchenwald , Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz concentration camps .

Life

Zwi Schulmann was drafted into the Polish army during World War II . After the surrender of the Polish army in October 1939, he was forcibly relocated to the Litzmannstadt (Łódź) ghetto . In August 1944, Schulmann was one of 65,000 people who were deported from the Lodz ghetto to Auschwitz. In 1947 he emigrated to Israel and fought in the Palmach- Hanegev Brigade in the Israeli War of Independence . After the war, he settled in Bet Dagon and married. The marriage had two children. In 1957 he moved to Rishon LeZion. There he opened the Mass Book Store and got involved in the city's public life. One focus of his work was international understanding between Israel and Germany.

As councilor of his hometown, he made a significant contribution to the twinning with Münster .

Shortly after his death, on October 3, 1986, the city of Münster decided to give a street the name Zwi-Schulmann-Weg. The choice fell on a newly planned street in the Münster Südost district ( Gremmendorf -Ost). Construction of the road and development of the building area began in 1996.
