history

The Zwolle Bible was commissioned by Herman Droem, Dean of the Marienkirche (Dutch Mariakerk) in Utrecht from the brothers in Zwolle, also known as Gregoriushuis. Jacobus van Enckhuysen created the manuscript , the text of which largely coincides with copies of the Bible by Thomas von Kempen , who was also working in Zwolle at the time . The creation of the text followed the ideals of the Devotio moderna .

The Bible was put on public display in Utrecht from 1476. Graffiti left by medieval visitors can still be seen today . They also stole some of the magnificent miniatures by cutting them out or whole pages by tearing them out.

The Bible became the property of the Dutch state in 1811 and has been kept in the library of the University of Utrecht since around 1840. Some of the lost miniatures were found later and are now reunited with the copy.
