Zygmunt Zabierzowski

Zygmunt Zabierzowski (born July 23, 1916 in Lisewo , Masuria , † January 26, 1978 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish sprinter and athletics trainer in Poland and Cuba .

Life

Before the Second World War , Zabierzowski was a sprinter at KS Polonia Warszawa . 1939 was his best year with a 3rd place at the student world championships in Monte Carlo over 400 m. His best time was 49.7 s. The war and the German occupation of Poland robbed him of his sporting opportunities. He was involved in the Warsaw Uprising and joined the Polish Home Army . After the war he finished his studies and became a trainer, from 1953 national trainer for sprint . Since the Polish team had worse than expected at the Summer Olympics in 1964 , he was fired and trained sprinters in Cuba from 1965 to 1977 as part of a program initiated by Tomasz Lempart . He convinced u. a. To switch Alberto Juantorena from a mediocre basketball player to sprint and also the 800 m. So he carefully led him to an Olympic victory over 800 m with extended sprint training. Due to illness he returned to Poland after the 1977 season, where he died.
