Adair County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . At the 2010 census , the county had 22,683 people and a population density of 15.2 people per square kilometer. It was named after the Adair Indian family of the Cherokee tribe. The county seat is Stilwell , named after Arthur E. Stilwell , a pioneer of the US railroad.

The county is located in eastern Oklahoma, bordering Arkansas, and has an area of ​​1,494 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Adair County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from former Cherokee country. It was named after the Cherokee Adair family. Near Westville , the Old Baptist Missionary Church , built in 1836 by the Trail of Tears Cherokee , still exists today . The Fort Wayne military post was built near Watts in 1838. It has since been abandoned, but played an important role in the American Civil War in 1862 .

Seven buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 20, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Adair County had 21,038 people in 7,471 households and 5,565 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.52 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 42.49 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.02 percent Pacific islander and 1.25 percent from other ethnic groups and 7.45 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 3.12 percent of the population.

Of the 7,471 households, 37.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.9 percent were single mothers. 25.5 percent were not families, 22.8 percent were single households, and 9.8 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.25.

30.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 33 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 94.4 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,881 , and the median income for a family was $ 29,525. Males had a median income of $ 23,741 versus $ 19,720 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,185. 19.4 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
