Tillman County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Frederick .

The county is located in southwest Oklahoma, borders Texas to the south and has an area of ​​2277 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kiowa County , Comanche County , Cotton County , Wichita County, Texas, Wilbarger County, Texas, and Jackson County .

history

Tillman County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Comanche Land. It was named after Benjamin Ryan Tillman , a Senator for South Carolina . The county was settled by white settlers after an official land lottery on August 1, 1901.

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 6, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Tillman County had 9,287 people in 3,594 households and 2,487 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.21 percent white, 9.02 percent African American, 2.68 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.61 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.12 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,828 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,854. Males had a median income of $ 23,039 versus $ 18,724 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,270. 17.3 percent of families and 21.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
