Seminole County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Wewoka .

The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of ​​1,659 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Okfuskee County , Hughes County , Pontotoc County, and Pottawatomie County .

history

Seminole County was formed from Seminole Land on July 16, 1907 as the original county . It was named after the North American Indian people of the Seminoles.

According to the 2000 census , Seminole County had 24,894 people in 9,575 households and 6,788 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.74 percent white, 5.59 percent African American, 17.39 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.22 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,575 households, 30.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers. 29.1 percent were not families, 25.9 percent were single households and 13.1 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05 people.

26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 90.0 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 25,568 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,791. Males had a median income of $ 25,954 versus women of $ 18,285. The per capita income was $ 13,956. 16.7 percent of families and 20.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
