Grant County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Medford .

The county is located in northern Oklahoma, bordering Kansas and has an area of ​​2599 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sumner County, Kansas, Kay County , Garfield County , Alfalfa County, and Harper County, Kansas.

Ulysses S. Grant

Grant County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1893. The county was settled by white settlers during the fourth official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 16, 1893. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant , the 18th President of the United States.

The first white colonization began in 1866 when a trading post was established on the Chisholm Trail , near Round Pond Creek . A year later, the first herds of cattle were herded through the area on the Chisholm Trail en route to Abilene , Kansas . On November 13, 1879, the first post office southeast of present-day Medford was opened and in 1888 the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway completed its railway line from Caldwell to Pond Creek Station.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 31, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Grant County had 5,144 people in 2,089 households and 1,456 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.31 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 2.45 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.7 percent were from others ethnic groups, and 1.30 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.85 percent of the population.

Of the 2,089 households, 30.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers. 30.3 percent were not families, 28.4 percent were single households and 15.8 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.95 people.

25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.5 percent between 18 and 24, 24.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 94.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,977 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,833. Males had a median income of $ 26,837 versus $ 19,036 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,709. 10.5 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
