Greer County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Mangum .

The county is located almost in the extreme southwest of Oklahoma and has an area of 1667 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kiowa County , Jackson County , Harmon County, and Beckham County .
history
Greer County was formed in 1890 from parts of the northern state of Texas . It was named after John Alexander Greer , an assistant governor of Texas.
In 1860, the area in the southwest corner of Oklahoma, between the Red River , the northern arm of the Red River and the 100th Meridian, was incorrectly assigned to Texas. Only in 1889 was amended by the United States Supreme Court (US Supreme Court) decided that this area has to be returned back to Oklahoma.
Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 31, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Greer County had 6,061 people in 2,237 households and 1,442 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.46 percent white, 8.78 percent African American, 2.47 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.99 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.02 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,237 households, 25.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers. 35.5 percent were not families, 33.4 percent were single households, and 19.8 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
20.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 123.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 129.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 25,793 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,702. Males had a median income of $ 24,318 versus $ 18,641 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,053. 15.0 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
