Murray County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Sulfur .

The county is located in south-central Oklahoma, about 70 km from Texas and covers an area of ​​1,101 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pontotoc County , Johnston County , Carter County, and Garvin Counties .

history

Murray County was formed from Chickasaw Land on July 16, 1907 as the original county . It was named after William H. Murray , a President of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitunional Convention") and later governor of Oklahoma.

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Platt National Park Historic District . Seven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 5, 2018.

As of the 2000 census , Murray County had 12,623 people in 5,003 households and 3,587 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.76 percent white, 1.90 percent African American, 11.57 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 25.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.5 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 92.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,294 , and the median income for a family was $ 37,303. Males had a median income of $ 28,381 versus $ 19,727 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,084. 11.1 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
