history
It was formed on January 5, 1822 from parts of Bath County and Botetourt County. It was named after the Allegheny Mountains in which it is located. From 1790 until after 1825 the hemp cultivation was the most important source of income. Hemp production was supported by the state at that time and every bale delivered was accepted and paid for. The hemp obtained here was brought to a rope factory in Richmond by horse and cart . When shiploads of hemp from abroad increased and the achievable price fell, the farmers switched to grain production and cattle breeding.
The census of 1840 showed a total population of 2749 people, of which 2142 were white, 60 "free colored" and 547 slaves. During the Civil War , the county sent more men to the Confederate Army than it had voters.
