Smyth County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 33,081 residents and a population density of 28 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Marion . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Smyth County is in southwest Virginia; it is with its southern tip about 5 km from Tennessee , in the southeast about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of 1171 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bland County , Wythe County , Grayson County , Washington County , Russell County, and Tazewell Counties .
history
It was formed in 1832 from parts of Washington County and Wythe County. It was named after Alexander Smyth , a general in the American Revolutionary War from 1812 to 1815, senator, member of the House of Representatives and member of the US Congress .

As of the 2000 census , Smyth County's population was 33,081. Of these, 1,085 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 13,493 households and 9,607 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.86 percent white, 1.87 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.60 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.
Of the 13,493 households, 29.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 26.0 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,083 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,392. Males had a median income of $ 26,698 versus $ 19,712 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,105. 9.9 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 15.2 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.0 percent of the population aged 65 or over.
