Giles County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 16,657 residents and a population density of 18 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Pearisburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Giles County is located in western Virginia, borders West Virginia to the southeast and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Craig County , Montgomery County , Pulaski County, and Bland Counties .
history
It was formed in 1806 from parts of Montgomery County, Tazewell County, Craig County and Wythe County. It was named after William Branch Giles , a lawyer, member of the House of Representatives, and governor of Virginia.

According to the 2000 census , Giles County had 16,657 people in 6,994 households and 4,888 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.41 percent white, 1.58 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.63 percent of the population.
Of the 6,994 households, 28.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 30.1 percent were non-families, 26.6 percent were single households and 12.8 percent were living with people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.85.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,927 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,089. Males had a median income of $ 32,075 versus $ 22,969 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,396. 6.6 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 11.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
