history

Until the church is planted

The place was first mentioned in a letter of protection from King Arnulf from 889. During the time of the tribal duchies, the place was in the Duchy of Franconia . In 1210 a Vogt Gernot von Bütthard is mentioned in documents. A descendant of Gernot ’s, Gernodus, called Herolt, sells his rights to the Büttharder Hocker (in) -hof in 1304. From Ulrich IV. Von Hanau , Büttert Castle came to the Würzburg Monastery on January 12, 1377 in exchange for the second half of the Schlüchtern court . Prince-Bishop Lorenz von Bibra granted the village market rights in 1503 . The former Bütthard office of the Würzburg bishopric, which belonged to the Franconian Empire , was left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg after secularization in 1803 in favor of Bavaria in 1805 , and with this in 1814 it finally fell to Bavaria. In 1818 the political municipality was established.

Jewish community

The members of the Jewish community, which had its own synagogue on the market square , were expelled or taken to concentration camps during the Nazi era until 1937 . A plaque on the town hall commemorates the Jewish residents who were killed during the Shoah .

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Gaurettersheim, Gützingen, Oesfeld and Tiefenthal were incorporated. Höttingen was added on May 1, 1978.
