About this picture

Thüngersheim is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg . It is located on the Main and is strongly influenced by viticulture. With more than 200 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the largest wine-growing communities in Franconia .

geography

The location in the rain shadow of the Rhön and Spessart leads to precipitation of 550 to 600 mm per year. This makes the central Main Valley one of the areas with the lowest rainfall in Germany. The Höhfeldplatte nature reserve is located southeast of Thüngersheim .

Neighboring communities

Kreuzberg pilgrimage

An outstanding religious event is the Thüngersheimer Kreuzberg pilgrimage, which takes place once a year around the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14th). It leads to the "holy mountain of the Franks ", the Kreuzberg in the Rhön . Presumably it goes back to a pledge from the time of the plague and has been proven in the early 18th century. Today it is carried out by the re-established Kreuzbruderschaft as well as the Würzburg Kreuzberg pilgrimage , carried out by the Würzburger Kreuzbruderschaft (the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross ), which in 1825 received permission from King Ludwig I to resume the five-day pilgrimage to the Kreuzberg, which was banned by the state in 1803. The traditional church of the Kreuzbruderschaft in Würzburg is the Neumünster (between 1808, since the Neumünster was used as a military depot at that time, and the Marienkapelle in 1821 ).
