history

Early history

The fertile soils of the Gau already attracted settlers in prehistoric times. The first settlements in the area of today's Gaukönigshofen can be identified as early as the time of the Bandkeramischen culture (approx. 5000 BC). Other evidence of settlement date from the Bronze Age (1800–1000 BC) and the early Iron Age ( Hallstatt Age ). This makes Gaukönigshofen one of the longest populated communities in the district.

In the Iron Age, the area was inhabited by the Celts as early as 400 BC . Field names like “Im kalten Bauern”, “Im kalten Feld” or “Kaltenhof” are reminiscent of the Celtic era. The Germans later immigrated . At the time of the Great Migration , the Gau was a transit area and a temporary settlement area for various Germanic peoples such as the Marcomanni , Alamanni and Thuringians . Settlement finds have also been proven of them.

Around the time between 700 and 800 AD, the Germanic tribe of the Franks expanded to the Main . Charlemagne's royal courts emerged in large numbers, including in Gaukönigshofen. The first written mention of the village of Gaukönigshofen in 741 comes from this time. The Oberzell Abbey has exercised the right of patronage over the parishes since 1326 . While the Würzburg monastery in Gaukönigshofen ruled the village from 1481, the Haug monastery in Würzburg predominantly ruled the village in Acholshausen and Rittershausen. There wealthy families were among others the Gebsattel , Stromberg, Rosenbach , Hund von Wenkheim and Zobel von Giebelstadt . The Outbound Burgvogt Mountain , located between Acholshausen and Gaukönigshofen above Thierbach, was originally built as a refuge castle and was expanded over the centuries to a typical medieval castle. In the German Peasants' War it was completely destroyed. Today only the moat can be seen.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent communities Acholshausen and Wolkshausen were incorporated. Eichelsee followed on April 1, 1975. Rittershausen was added on May 1, 1978.

Blazon : "A green perennial with three stems and three green leaves on each growing out of a red stalk."
Foundation of the coat of arms: The local coat of arms, dated 1607, was discovered in 1961 during the renovation of the town hall of Gaukönigshofen in the triangular gable of a portal. The tinging of silver and red indicates the old colors of the coat of arms of the Würzburg monastery, which formerly exercised state sovereignty over the community.
