Bettina Schmidt (married Neumann; born June 2, 1960 in Staßfurt ; † April 28, 2019 ) was a German luge athlete .

Life

Bettina Schmidt grew up in a sports-loving family in Eisenach , her father was a successful handball coach . She first tried her hand at breaststroke and shot put , but was discovered for luge in 1974. The following year she was runner-up in the GDR 's children and youth party , which she finally won in 1977.

At the European Championships in 1978, Schmidt first won silver and then became European Junior Champion. In 1981 she only had to admit defeat to her clubmate from ASK Vorwärts Oberhof , Melitta Sollmann , at the world championships in Hammarstrand . In 1982 he won the European Championship, and in 1983 a fourth place at the World Cup. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , Bettina Schmidt won the silver medal behind Steffi Martin (also from the GDR).

Schmidt was the first female Olympian from Eisenach. After her career, the former studied lieutenant of the NVA sport. After the fall of the Wall, she opened a shop in Eisenach and was a trainer at ThSV Eisenach . Most recently she successfully trained the luge riders of the North Rhine-Westphalian Bobsleigh and Sled Association - Madeleine Teuber was junior world champion in 2005. She lived with her husband in Eisenach. They had two children together. Bettina Schmidt died on April 28, 2019 after a long and serious illness.
