The federal motorway 535 (abbreviation: BAB 535 ) - short form: Autobahn 535 (abbreviation: A 535 ) - leads from the Velbert-Nord motorway triangle (connection to the A 44 ) to the Sonnborner Kreuz in Wuppertal (connection to the A 46 ) and has a length of 14 Kilometers. Until the beginning of November 2008, the A 535 was still largely designated as federal road 224 , but now the signs on the motorway have consistently been completed with blue motorway signs. Only the signposts on the access roads are largely unchanged.

history

The first section was built in the course of the construction of the A 46 in 1973/74 between the Sonnborner Kreuz and the Wuppertal district of Dornap and ended there until 1990 at Bundesstraße 7 . Despite a length of only two kilometers (which made it the shortest autobahn in Germany until 2007), it received a full connection to all four outgoing routes in the expectation of further expansion in the Sonnborner Kreuz soon. Although it was always signposted as the B 224, it ensured that the junction , which was known as the Wuppertal-Sonnborn motorway junction until 1995 (at that time the largest inner-city motorway junction in Europe), was actually a motorway junction, as apart from the A 46 there with the L 74 and L 418 otherwise only two highway-like state roads end.

Due to the complex construction of the “Großer Busch” tunnel, the gap to the B 224 (n) between Wülfrath and the Velbert-Nord motorway triangle, which had been built in the meantime, was not closed until 1990 . The upgrading of the B 224 between Wuppertal-Dornap and the Velbert-Nord triangle to the A 535 took place on September 1, 2007.

Planning

It was planned to extend the A 535 after the construction of the Ruhralleetunnel in Essen (this is classified as an urgent need in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003) to Essen-Bergerhausen to the A 52 via the current route of the B 227 . Since December 2005, this has been expanded consistently like a motorway between Velbert- Langenberg and Essen-Rellinghausen. However, the section in question to Essen-Heisingen was added to the A 44 on January 1, 2010 .
