The federal autobahn 980 (abbreviation: BAB 980 ) - short form: autobahn 980 (abbreviation: A 980 ) - leads from the Autobahn triangle Allgäu past the federal autobahn 7 past Durach to the junction Waltenhofen, where it merges into the federal highway 12 . It was planned as a section of the previously planned pre-Alpine motorway A 98 . Since the plans for this route have since been abandoned, it is currently the feeder motorway from Oberstdorf and the Ostallgäu. This is why this short motorway stub was given a new name. The motorway crosses the Iller between the junction of Durach and Waltenhofen .

In December 2012 the ADAC published statistics in which the A980 is one of the ten most dangerous motorways for wrong-way drivers . In 2010 and 2011 there were 16 reports of wrong-way drivers on this motorway. Extrapolated to 100 km and per year, there are statistically 156.9 wrong-way driver reports and thus "2nd place". According to these statistics, only the A 255 (Hamburg-Süd - Neue Elbbrücken ) is more dangerous with 166.7 statistical reports of wrong-way drivers per 100 km per year.
