Status: Planning discarded

The federal autobahn 85 (abbreviation: BAB 85 ) - short form: Autobahn 85 (abbreviation: A 85 ) - ("Filderautobahn") was a planned autobahn, which after its completion as a connection between Schwäbisch Hall , Stuttgart and Ravensburg and in the area of Stuttgart as City highway would have served. The A 85 should branch off north of Schwäbisch Hall from the A 6 , to the west past Schwäbisch Hall (today: Kreisstraße 2576), then follow the course of the federal road 14 to Backnang and bypass this town to the west. Its further planned course south of Backnang to Waiblingen corresponds to that of the federal highway 14, which has now been converted into a yellow autobahn . Southeast Waiblingen should meet at the junction of the B 14 with the federal highway 29, the A 85 and the A 87 .

On the already completed route of the B 29 and B 14 between Waiblingen and Fellbach , the joint routing of the A 85 and A 87 was planned. The motorway should then continue in a south-westerly direction, where it would have crossed with the planned and also discarded A 80 (as B 10 under traffic). This section is now implemented as the B 14. In the course of the southeast bypass of Stuttgart, a motorway junction with the A 8 was planned near Neuhausen .

The A 85 would then have followed the course of today's federal highway 312 . In Metzingen another interchange with the planned and discarded should A84 arise. From Reutlingen it was intended to continue the route of the A 85 to Ertingen and further north of Ravensburg to the planned and canceled A 89 . This construction would have replaced the federal highways B 313 and B 32 .

The planning of the A 85 was abandoned.

Planning history

Already during the Weimar Republic , the connection between Hechingen and Weingarten was planned in the second stage of the so-called “top network”. In the network plans of the National Socialists, however, the planning of a Reichsautobahn for this route was just as absent as between Stuttgart and Riedlingen . Between 1934 and 1938, a connection between Nuremberg and Stuttgart was planned in the basic motorway network, which would run via Ansbach , Crailsheim , Vellberg , Gaildorf , Murrhardt , Backnang to Ludwigsburg, where it would flow into the Heilbronn - Stuttgart route. After 1938 these plans were abandoned in favor of a line from Nuremberg - Heilbronn - Rhine-Neckar area.

The expansion plan for the federal trunk roads of the law of July 27, 1957 did not yet provide for the construction of a federal freeway, but federal road 19 between Würzburg and Schwäbisch Hall, federal road 14 between Schwäbisch Hall, Waiblingen and Stuttgart and Aalen, federal road 27 between Stuttgart and Tübingen, the federal road 312 / federal road 311 / federal road 32 between Tübingen and Ravensburg included in the "blue network" of the new or to be expanded federal highways.

The requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 of June 30, 1971 contained the new four-lane construction of federal highways 19, 14, 312, 27n, 312n, 32 and 32n. The following sub-projects were planned:

Short name section expansion Urgency level
B 19 AS Schwäbisch Hall ( A 6 ) - Zusatzshausen four-lane I.
B 19 Übersigshausen - west of Schwäbisch Hall four-lane II
B 14 west of Schwäbisch Hall - south of Backnang (junction with "Autobahn 13", later A 45 ) four-lane II
B 14 south of Backnang (junction with A 45) - south-east of Waiblingen (triangle with the B 29 , later federal motorway 87 ) four-lane I.
B 29 southeast of Waiblingen (triangle with A 87) - Fellbach (triangle with A 87) six-lane completed
B 312 Fellbach - Stuttgart- Gaisburg (cross with the B 10 , later A 80 ) four-lane I.

With the restructuring of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the entire route was combined under the uniform designation as "Federal Motorway 85".

In the network map of the federal government of January 1, 1976, the A 85 was included unchanged.

The requirements plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976 showed the route of federal motorway 87 unchanged. However, the urgency of the individual sections has been modified. The following picture emerged:

section expansion was standing
AS Schwäbisch Hall (A 6) - Zusatzshausen - west of Schwäbisch Hall four-lane 1st lane in urgency level Ia, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement
west of Schwäbisch Hall - south of Backnang four-lane possible further need
south of Backnang - Nellmersbach (junction with the A 45) - Winnenden four-lane Urgency level Ib
Winnenden - Korb or northeast Waiblingen four-lane Urgency level Ia
Korb or northeast Waiblingen - southeast Waiblingen (triangle with the A 87) four-lane ongoing project
southeast of Waiblingen (triangle with A 87) - Fellbach (triangle with A 87) six-lane completed

east of Filderstadt (triangle with the A 83) - north-east of Grötzingen (triangle with the A 83) four-lane ongoing project
northeast of Grötzingen (triangle with the A 83) - Metzingen (junction with the A 84 north of Metzingen); (Cross with the B 28 south of Metzingen) four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement
Metzingen (cross with B 28) - east Eningen under Achalm - Engstingen - east Trochtelfingen - east Gammertingen - east Veringenstadt - Langenenslingen (triangle with A 88) - north Herbertingen (cross with A 86) - east Bad Saulgau - east Altshausen - northwest of Baienfurt or Ravensburg (triangle with the A 89) four-lane 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement

With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal trunk roads from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the end of the A 85 came. The planning was limited to the construction of new sections and sections of federal roads 19, 14, 312 , 313 and 32:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 14 / B 19 AS Schwäbisch Hall (A 6) - Zusatzshausen two-lane ongoing project

The third law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways of April 21, 1986 did not lead to the re-inclusion of the A 85 in the requirement plan. The expansion and construction of federal highways 14, 19, 312, 313 and 32 were also carried out:

Short name section expansion Urgency level
B 14 / B 19 Übersigshausen - west of Schwäbisch Hall two-lane I.

The A 85 was still not included in the requirements plan of the Fourth Law on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of November 15, 1993. The expansion and new construction of federal highways 14, 19, 312, 313 and 32 had the following projects as the subject matter:

B 14 west of Backnang (new line of the B 313) - Winnenden four-lane urgent need

The requirements plan of the Fifth Act on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 did not result in any new entries with regard to the A 85. Furthermore, the expansion and construction of federal highways 14, 312, 313 and 32 was planned as follows:
