Dick Nichols

Richard "Dick" Nichols (born April 29, 1926 in Fort Scott , Bourbon County , Kansas ; † March 7, 2019 ) was an American politician . Between 1991 and 1993 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dick Nichols attended the public schools of his home country and then Kansas State University until 1951 . In between he was an ensign in the US Navy from 1944 to 1947 . He later became an adviser to the Kansas State Agriculture Committee and served as the deputy head of the agriculture department at a radio and television station in Topeka . Nichols was also an Agricultural Representative for a bank in Hutchinson . Since 1969 he was chairman of the board of directors of Home State Bank in McPherson .

Nichols joined the Republican Party and was temporarily a member of the party executive in Kansas. Between 1986 and 1990 he was party leader in the fifth congressional electoral district of his state. In 1988 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in New Orleans , where George Bush was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the 1990 congressional elections, Nichols was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth district of Kansas , where he succeeded Bob Whittaker on January 3, 1991 . But since the eighth constituency was dissolved in 1992 and Nichols was defeated in the congressional primaries in the fourth district, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1993 .

Dick Nichols later continued to run the Home State Bank in McPherson, where he also resided.
