Howard Shultz Miller (born February 27, 1879 in Somerset County , Pennsylvania , † January 2, 1970 in Hiawatha , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1955 he represented the first constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1882, Howard Miller and his family came to Morrill , Kansas. He attended Brown County public schools and Sabetha High School . Between 1894 and 1899 he worked as a teacher himself. After studying law at the University of Nebraska Law School at Lincoln and his admission to the bar in 1901, he began to practice in his new profession, in which he remained active until 1952. He also worked in agriculture on the side.

Politically, Miller became a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1952 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Kansas . There he took over from Albert M. Cole on January 3, 1953 , whom he had defeated in the election. But since Miller was defeated by Republican William H. Avery in the next election , he could only remain in Congress for one term . To date, he is the only Democrat to represent the first Kansas constituency in Congress.

In 1956, he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. After that he was a rancher in Brown County. Miller also stood up for the environment and especially for soil protection. He died on January 2, 1970 and was buried in Morrill.
