Edward Herbert Rees (born June 3, 1886 in Emporia , Lyon County , Kansas , † October 25, 1969 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1961 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Rees attended the public schools of his home country and then the Kansas State Teachers' College at Emporia, where he was trained as a teacher. Between 1909 and 1911 he taught in Lyon County and from 1912 to 1918 he was a clerk at the local district court. After studying law in the meantime and being admitted to the bar in 1915, he began working in this profession in Emporia. He also devoted himself to agricultural activities in the following years.

Politically, Rees was a member of the Republican Party . From 1927 to 1933 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Kansas ; between 1933 and 1935 he was a member of the State Senate . He was also a member of the Judicial Council of the State of Kansas from 1933 to 1937 .

In 1936 Rees was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Randolph Carpenter of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1937 . After eleven re-elections, he was able to complete a total of twelve legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1961 . During this time the Second World War , the Korean War and the beginning of the Cold War took place . In addition, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution came into force in 1951 , which reorganized the terms of office of the President. Between 1947 and 1949 Rees was chairman of the Committee on the Supervision of the Department of Post and from 1953 to 1955 he chaired the committee that dealt with the public services ( Committee on Civil Service ). In 1960 he refused to run again.

After the end of his time in Congress, Edward Rees worked again as a lawyer in Emporia, where he died in October 1969.
