Jan Meyers

Jan Meyers (born July 20, 1928 in Lincoln , Nebraska , † June 21, 2019 in Merriam , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1985 and 1997 she represented the third constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

January Meyers attended the public schools in Superior (Nebraska) and William Woods College in Fulton ( Missouri ). She then studied at the University of Kansas until 1951 . Between 1951 and 1954 she worked in the advertising and public relations department at a radio station in Omaha and then at a department store in Lincoln.

Politically, Meyers joined the Republican Party . Between 1967 and 1972 she worked for the Overland Park City Council in Kansas. From 1970 to 1972 she was also a councilor there and from 1972 to 1984 she was a member of the Kansas Senate . In 1984 she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of the state , where she succeeded Larry Winn on January 3, 1985 . After five re-elections, she was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1997 . From 1995 to 1997 she was Chair of the Committee on Small Business .

In 1996 she decided not to run again. After leaving Congress, she did not hold any other political offices. Her son Phil Meyers applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the State of Hawaii in 2000 . Jan Meyers died on the morning of June 21, 2019 at the age of 90.
